Defining A Core Set of GIS Methodologies for Business Study and Application - Roundtable Discussion
Primary Session Organizer: University of North Texas
Business geography is a small but diverse field. Diversity has many advantages related to the multiplication of varying approaches and areas of emphasis on business problem solving from a geographical perspective. However, a disadvantage of diversity is the risk of different approaches leading to confusion among the executives and analysts that typically work closely with business geographers. While few business geographers would want to impeded creativity, some level of agreement on the methodologies that are standard and helpful in various areas of application would also be helpful.
This session begins with the list of methods identified in a forthcoming book entitled "Business GIS Methods & Applications". This handbook identifies eight foundational methods and four application areas of some general interest. The basic question this round table session aims to address is whether the foundational methods and application areas are well-chosen. This session is an opportunity for business geography community members to examine the foundations of the field and provide some baseline level of what might be considered standard practice in terms of GIS application.
